Nepal Project

Ever since Rotary President Shekhar Mehta (2021-2022) emphasized the Rotary initiative for the empowerment of women, and encouraged efforts to combat human trafficking, the Rotary Club of Falmouth Cape Cod has been focused on preventing the trafficking of Nepali girls from remote villages in the Himalayan mountains, into Indian brothels.

By partnering with Her Future Coalition (herfuturecoalition.org) and the Hasta Memorial school in Nuwakot, Nepal (founded by a survivor/activist), we have helped provide education, shelter, and skills training, to hundreds of children at high risk of being trafficked or forced into child marriage.

Our work in conjunction with other Rotary clubs has included:

  • daily tutoring/teaching of girls over zoom in English, Math, and other subjects

  • outfitting rooms for the new hostel to allow girls from remote areas to attend school (kitchen, dorm bunk room, added porch railings for safety)

  • providing solar power to the on-site hostel to prevent interruptions of the zoom lessons  due to the inadequate power grid in the mountains

  • providing hundreds of books for a library as well as math manipulative toys, recorders, and school supplies.

  • making a computer lab by providing desks, chairs, laptops, mouses, mouse pads

  • putting solar hot water on the hostel to provide warm water for winter showers

  • sent funds for welcome kits for girls joining the school (admission fees, school supplies, bedding, towels, toiletries, uniforms, school shoes, and the first three months of room/board)

  • raised money for the infrastructure for a sustainable agriculture project including chicken and egg production and outreach to more remote villages.
