Allison McCumber is being honored this week as part of our Student Recognition Program. She is an exceptional student with a 3.96 unweighted GPA and has earned High Honor Roll recognition throughout her high school career. Allison is an active member of several honor societies, serving as Vice President of the Spanish National Honor Society, Secretary of the Science National Honor Society, Secretary of Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics National Honor Society), and a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Allison's academic achievements, particularly in science, are outstanding. She earned 1st Place at the 2024 Falmouth High School Science Fair for her project, Ocean Warming and Its Effects on Aquatic Bird Migration. She also received 2nd Place and the Dr. Donald J. Zinn Award at the State Pond Area Bird Sanctuaries competition, along with the Marine Biological Laboratory's Dr. Arnold Clark Scholarship. Her accomplishments have also been recognized with the St. Lawrence University Book Award, the Society of Women Engineers Honors in Science Award, and an invitation to participate in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at Roger Williams University. In addition, she was selected to receive the Young Birders Award from the Cape Cod Bird Club, earning a full scholarship to attend Hog Island Audubon Camp.
Beyond the classroom, Allison is a dedicated leader and active member of her school community. She serves as President of the Plant Club, Captain of the Math Team, and Director of the Morning News. She is also involved in Theater Tech, Concert Band, Marching Band, Indoor and Outdoor Track, Robotics, and Yearbook, demonstrating her wide range of interests and commitment to school life.
Allison is equally passionate about serving her community and protecting the environment. Since 2023, she has volunteered as a Herring Counter with the Coonamessett River Trust, collecting environmental data and educating the public. She also volunteers at the Falmouth Road Race, Cape Cod Marathon, and Falmouth Triathlon, participates in community cleanups, supports local fundraising efforts, and contributes to the Pulsera Project, helping artisans in Central America through fair-trade bracelet sales.
Her passion for science extends beyond volunteer work. Allison completed an Environmental Education and Leadership Internship at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, where she developed educational materials, conducted scientific resource surveys, and engaged the public in learning about local ecosystems. She also balances her academic and extracurricular commitments while working at Shaw's Supermarket.
